Where To Stay

A Walk Across The Rooftops – Grasshoppers Hotel, Glasgow

Imagine a stylish, boutique hotel miles above the bustling streets of Glasgow with breathtaking views across the rooftops and with home comforts a-plenty. Imagine that for as little as a bargain £78 per night, you could stay in a beautiful, spacious double room replete with high ceilings and cornices, aw’ posh and grand like. Well, that’s what’s on offer at Grasshoppers Hotel which rather gallusly (boldly) sits atop Central Station. Each room has been individually designed and not one is the same. This is the room I stayed in and mightily bright and comfy it was too.

The entire place has a homely, cosy and laid-back vibe to it and boy, do they know how to treat the weary traveller. Part of my welcome package included coffee and a home-baked cupcake delivered to my room upon arrival. I can’t even begin to tell you how tasty this was!

But this wasn’t all. Did I mention the complimentary drinks and tube of Smarties?

Oh, and the home bakes nestling in cake tiers and jars in the hallways and sitting room. The hotel’s philosophy is all about being a home from home, so in keeping with the spirit of this, you are free to help yourself! BE CALORIFICALLY ADVISED. Needless to say, this establishment smells heavenly!

People Make Glasgow as the city’s motto goes and the people who work at Grasshoppers Hotel are no exception. They couldn’t have been more helpful or welcoming and the care with which they look after their business is second to none. The sitting room area is filled with books and the hallways have art books to browse through.

A Walk Across The Rooftops

What stood out for me with this place though were the panoramas of Glasgow with stunning views of Central Station’s elegant, Victorian glass roof and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s Lighthouse building to name but a few.

I also had the best night’s rest here as in spite of the hotel being above busy Union Street and the station, it was gloriously peaceful and quiet with the comfiest hotel bed I ever did have Big Z’s in. To top things off, breakfast was located in the cosy confines of The Kitchen with freshly baked bread and cooked breakfast goodies of which you helped yourself. Oh, and coffee of course. Plenty of coffee. The breakfast food offered changes on a daily basis with the hotel supporting produce which is locally available and they also do suppers, but be sure to book in advance.

This hotel is a charming, wee gem. A hearty top marks from Take It From A Local. I’ll definitely be heading back soon!
